The Aviation Safety Network today released last year's airliner accident statistics showing a record low total of 425 airliner accident fatalities, as a result of 26 accidents. Africa still is the most unsafe region. (ASN)

The FBI, FAA and TSA are investigating several incidents of lasers shining into the cockpits of airplanes on approach to U.S. airports in the last week. Pilots of six commercial airliners, a police helicopter and a Cessna Citation described seeing beams of green light in the cockpit that originated on the ground. The FAA said lasers in the cockpit can startle, distract, disorient or temporarily blind pilots, and could potentially cause an accident. A Yakutia Airlines Tupolev 154 struck approach lights and touched down just short of the runway thresholf while attempting to land at Kittilä Airport, Finland. None of the 11 crew members and 155 passengers were injured. The plane sustained damage to the rear of the fuselage and flaps. A Malaysia Airlines Airbus A.330 bound for Osaka, Japan was grounded at Kuala Lumpur after maintenance crew found hydraulic oil spilled on the instrument panel in the cockpit. An Air Sahara Canadair RJ suffered right main landing gear collapse after touchdown at Goa, India. None of the four crew members of flight 2200, a ferry flight, were injured. The French BEA released their investigation report into the June 2003 CFIT crash of a Canadair RJ near Brest. It appeared that the crew failed to select the APPR mode prior to the approach and that they were first focused on vertical and thereafter only horizontal navigation, failing to note their dangerous descent in time. 08 JAN 2005 MD-83 suffers landing gear collapse at Cali [to table of contents] An Aero República MD-83 suffered a landing gear collapse after touchdown at Cali Airport, Colombia. During an audit of the country's operating airlines, the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation immediately grounded two aircraft for safety reasons. During airport construction works at Kolkata (Calcutta), India a road-roller damaged a cable which supplied power to the main runway lights. According to the Kenyan investigators, a G-159 Gulfstream I accident at Busia in January 2003 was caused by the fact that the crew attempted to take-off on a runway which was too short given the airplane's weight. It was also discovered that both the captain's as well as the airplane's papers had been tampered with. Uncertified parts were fitted onto the aircraft and maintenance personnel for the aircraft were not trained and licensed. A fire on Glasgow Airport, UK, caused relatively minor damage to a bmi Embraer RJ.145. The fire, which caused disruption to several morning flights, may have been started deliberately, according to police. (BBC) 24 JAN 2005 Atlas Air B747 overruns runway at Düsseldorf [to table of contents]
Atlas Air Boeing 747-212B(SF) N808MC overran runway 23L after landing at Düsseldorf. The nr.2 engine caught fire and sustained damage. The aircraft had arrived from Dubai on flight EK8995. (ASN)

25 JAN 2005 Fokker 100 nosegear collapse after runway excursion [to table of contents] A Montenegro Airlines Fokker 100 jet ran off the side of the runway during a night landing in snowy conditions at Podgorica. On January 20 JetsGo flight 191 from Toronto landed at Calgary's runway 34 but veered off the side. The MD-83 ran 1,600 feet along the frozen ground and ran over a sign, apparently damaging flaps, landing gear doors and hydraulics. Korean Air has secured a global aviation safety approval by successfully completing the IATA`s Operational Safety Audit (IOSA). Korean Air said the five-day audit was conducted on 755 items in eight categories including operation, maintenance, cargo, and air security, adding that the company met all required international standards. SAS Braathens flight 4406, operated by Boeing 737-500 LN-BRV, skidded on the runway at Evenes, Norway while landing on runway 17 during a heavy snowstorm. The aircraft came to a halt after skidding/turning through 90 degrees. A push back truck towed the plane off the runway. (ASN)
